San Mateo County gay marriages could resume next week

San Mateo County officials said they stand ready to issue gay marriage licenses next week if a judge's ruling Thursday to begin allowing same-sex unions isn't put on hold again.

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled at a San Francisco courthouse to allow gay marriages in California to resume starting Wednesday at 5 p.m., enough time for an appeals court to review the case. He had previously ruled Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, was unconstitutional but placed an immediate stay, or postponement, on the ruling so it would not take effect right away.

In San Mateo County, Deputy Clerk Theresa Rabe said her office will begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses at the scheduled time if the appeals court does not enact its own stay on Walker's ruling before then.

"We are getting ready for Wednesday at 5 o'clock unless the 9th Circuit appellate court tells us no," Rabe said. "It's another wait and see."

The office, which typically closes at 5 p.m. daily, may stay open late on Wednesday if Walker's ruling is upheld, Rabe said. Otherwise, the first same-sex wedding licenses will be printed as soon as 8 a.m. Thursday.

Assuming the clerk's office can issue same-sex wedding licenses, the county will hold weddings all day in its chapel, Rabe said. Typically, the chapel holds no more than four wedding per day but makes exceptions on special occasions, such as the first day same-sex marriages were allowed

in 2008 when the courts overturned the previous ban.

Rabe said the clerk's office had a high number of calls from couples Thursday asking about the ruling, and some others came to the county office in Redwood City seeking information. They were told they will have to wait.

Among San Mateo County voters, 62 percent voted against Proposition 8 in November 2008 -- a 14-point swing compared to the statewide tally. When gay marriage was briefly legal in 2008, there were about 1,000 more weddings than the year prior in San Mateo County, a 25 percent increase.

The decision came as gay and lesbian couples lined up across the state, including at San Francisco City Hall, a few blocks away from the federal courthouse, hoping the judge would permit them to get married Thursday.

Jim Campbell, a lawyer for the Alliance Defense Fund, one of the groups defending Proposition 8, said they would "appeal immediately" to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to block same-sex marriages from taking place while the appeal is pending. The broader legal challenge is expected to stretch for another year or two and ultimately reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

In his order, the judge suggested that the Proposition 8 campaign may not have legal standing to even press its appeal, which would leave no defense of the law in the appeals courts. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown did not defend Proposition 8 during the January trial, and have now both taken the position that they consider the law unconstitutional.

Schwarzenegger today again expressed support for Walker's conclusions, saying in a statement that he believes the latest order "continues to place California at the forefront in providing freedom and equality for all people."

Legal experts predict that either the 9th Circuit or the Supreme Court is likely to put Walker's ruling on hold while the appeals courts hash out the larger question of whether Proposition 8 tramples on the equal rights of the state's same-sex couples. Lawyers for the two same-sex couples who sued to overturn Proposition 8 argued that they should be able to marry immediately, but Proposition 8 lawyers have argued that allowing same-sex marriages in the interim could foster legal confusion across California.

And if there is a window of time when same-sex couples marry while the Proposition 8 legal challenge is on appeal, there is no guarantee those marriage licenses will remain in force if Walker's decision is ultimately overturned. Gay and lesbian couples who marry now are in a different legal posture than the approximately 18,000 couples who married during the months before voters approved Proposition 8 -- marriages that remain valid.

Attendants: 'Our hero!'

Cynthia Susanne, ex-wife of Steven Slater

It's inhuman up there.

Workers, unite! Let's sing the praises of Steven Slater -- the flight attendant who rose from the depths of employee hell to stand up for abused wage slaves everywhere. "Eff you!"

"He's a hero in all our eyes!" said American Airlines flight attendant Holly, who laughed at La Guardia with three fellow stews -- with a century of flying time among them. It beats crying.

When Slater unleashed his infamous public-address system rant heard 'round the heavens to a customer who clocked him in the head, he delivered more than a primal scream from one stressed-out attendant living out a Charles Bronson revenge fantasy.

As he snatched two beers before exiting the plane via the JetBlue emergency chute, Slater spoke for a generation of workers who've been forced to bend over and take it from a public that's lost its last vestige of civility.

Free Steven! Or at least remember the hero next time you abuse the help.

The stories flight crews tell about barnyard behavior are enough to make an innocent flier beg forgiveness. There was a woman who grew enraged when she was denied a needle -- expecting a flight attendant to rid her eye of a sty.

"Cry all you want, I will not give you a needle," said flight attendant Jennifer. "Gross!"

Some passengers change nasty diapers on folding tables -- then leave the evidence in seat pockets.

"There's the Britney Spears trick," offered colleague Jeannie. "Who would go to the [bathroom] with bare feet? They do! In first class, the shoes are the first things to come off!"

"I had a woman hold something out for me to take. It was her gum!" offered Leigh. "Makes you wonder who's riding the Greyhound bus."

When did the once-glamorous world of commercial flight turn into an aerial landfill?

Airline cutbacks, no food or free checked baggage, coupled with post-9/11 security measures have made flying incredibly stressful. But attendants with whom I spoke say they saw a breakdown in courtesy before the terrorist attacks. It's evident on the subway or at the bodega, too -- folks feel entitled to unleash their inner Naomi Campbell.

It can get vicious. One woman worker for a major airline told me a customer cursed her, then filed a complaint, telling the airline she was the one who swore.

"They didn't want to pay the change fee. I couldn't do anything. Then they said, 'I don't like the way you said that.' They think if they complain, they'll get a free ticket."

The woman, who's been with her carrier 20 years, was suspended without pay for two months as the airline investigated. Then she went "on trial."

"It's funny. It's like you killed somebody."

She was cleared after eyewitnesses testified for her. Surprisingly, this attendant still goes the extra mile for customers.

"You do this long enough, you get into the 'duck syndrome,' " said Jeannie. "You just let it roll off your back like a duck."

A man once ranted at Holly for no reason. When she asked what was wrong, the man raved, "I want to make someone else's life miserable!"

Holly smiled sweetly and said, "You'll be off this plane in three hours, sir. In the meantime, I'll be glad to get you something to drink."

Be nice to your flight attendant. She (or he) knows where the booze and emergency exits are located.

Uang Saku Justin Bieber US$350 per Minggu

Justin Bieber belum diizinkan menyimpan uangnya sendiri.

Georgia runoff too close to call; Bennet gets big win in Colorado

By Steve Brusk and Kevin Bohn, CNN
August 11, 2010 -- Updated 0658 GMT (1458 HKT)

(CNN) -- An incumbent U.S. senator with help from the White House held off a tough primary challenge in Colorado, a former wrestling executive easily won the Republican nomination for the Senate in Connecticut, and a dramatic runoff for the Republican governor's nomination in Georgia was too close to call on a busy primary night Tuesday.

Four states went to the polls with high-profile primaries for governors and the U.S. Senate. Three of the races for governor kept candidates and supporters biting their nails into the early morning hours.

In Colorado, incumbent U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet claimed victory in the Democratic primary after staving off a fierce challenge from former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff. Bennet will face Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, who -- with the support of many Tea Party backers -- defeated former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton for the GOP nomination.

In Connecticut, former World Wrestling Entertainment executive Linda McMahon won the GOP nomination for Senate, besting former Rep. Rob Simmons and businessman Peter Schiff. McMahon will face Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in November.

In Georgia, even a runoff wasn't enough to immediately determine a winner in the GOP governor's race. Associated Press numbers showed former Congressman Nathan Deal held a 50.2-49.8 percent lead over former Secretary of State Karen Handel in a race that featured high-profile surrogates and sharp barbs in the final days. Deal did not immediately declare victory, and under Georgia law a candidate can request a recount if the margin is less than 1 percent.

With all precincts reporting, the margin was just 2,431 votes out of more than half a million cast.

The race for the GOP nomination for Colorado governor was too close to call early Wednesday morning. AP said with 90 percent of the vote counted, Tea Party favorite Dan Maes was holding a small 50.5-49.5 percent lead over the one-time frontrunner, former Rep. Scott McInnis. McInnis stumbled late in the campaign amid allegations of plagiarism.

In Minnesota, in a political comeback, former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton overtook state House speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher to win the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party nomination for governor in Minnesota, AP projects. Dayton will face GOP nominee Tom Emmer and Independent Party candidate Tom Horner in November.

In Connecticut, Greenwich millionaire Tom Foley held off a late charge from Lt. Gov. Michael Fidele to win the GOP nomination for governor. And on the Democratic side, former Stamford, Connecticut, mayor Dan Malloy easily defeated Ned Lamont.

Speaking to a couple hundred exuberant supporters, a victorious Bennet at times sounded more like a challenger than the incumbent who had just won.

"I know Washington has a lot to learn from Colorado," he told the crowd. "Our country does not end at the Potomac River... Washington is full of politicians who are more interested in scoring points than doing the hard work to turn our economy around," he said.

Bennet acknowledged in his remarks that this was the first time Colorado voters had actually seen his name on a ballot. He was appointed last year to fill out the remaining term of then-Sen. Ken Salazar, who President Obama appointed Interior Secretary. Noting some political experts and pundits just a week ago had counted his campaign out when Romanoff pulled even in polls with Bennet, the senator said he had a simple message for them: "Welcome to Colorado."

Key to Bennet's victory was a strong outreach effort by President Obama, who recorded a robocall praising Bennet and phoned in to a telephone town hall last week, and the Democratic National Committee, which sponsored a phone bank to enlist supporters as well as other activities. The race became a proxy war of sorts of endorsements after Romanoff was endorsed by former President Clinton, who had known him since 1992.

Campaign aides say that Obama called Bennet after he was declared the winner tonight. They didn't give any details of the conversation.

Bennet campaign aides say they will mount the general election effort immediately. He will hold a unity rally with Romanoff and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine on Thursday in Denver, Colorado, and a town hall Saturday.

Norton had support from establishment Republicans including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and was the early favorite. But Buck, who is backed by many in the Tea Party movement, closed the gap in the final weeks.

After a contentious campaign, Buck told supporters, "Get a good night's sleep because for the next 83 days, we are going to unite the Republican Party. We are going to reach out our hand for those independent voters and Democrats who are also fed up with Washington D.C."

Norton, admitted disappointment as she addressed her campaign party, saying, "This election is more than Ken Buck or Jane Norton. This election is about America and our future. We are losing our country, and it is our job to take it back."

The GOP primary made national headlines after video of Buck went viral on YouTube. In the clip, Buck jokingly told people gathered at a campaign rally that they should support him "because I don't wear high heels." Days later the Norton campaign used the video in a campaign commercial.

McMahon, along with her husband Vince, operated World Wrestling Entertainment from its startup in 1980 until last year, when she announced her candidacy. McMahon has said she'll spend up to $50 million of her own money on her bid to join the Senate. She's fended off charges from her GOP opponents that she's tried to buy the election, and she's also defended herself from the steroids scandals that have rocked professional wrestling over the past two decades.

In her victory speech, she told supporters it was time for the party to unify.

"Families don't always get along and don't always agree, but in the end, they do stand together," she said, saying the focus should be on people hurt by the economy.

The November matchup in Connecticut will pit McMahon against Blumenthal, who faced controversy in May when he apologized for misstating that he served in Vietnam. Blumenthal served in the Marine Corps Reserves stateside during the Vietnam War.

In Georgia, Deal came out to address supporters, telling them "we're still waiting...but we are encouraged. It's too early to say anything more than that." Minutes later, Handel told her supporters to "keep our fingers crossed," saying there were still a lot of absentee ballots to be counted.

The photo finish capped a runoff sprint where the candidates traded sharp barbs in the final days, each bringing in a national figure for 11th-hour campaigning. Sarah Palin campaigned for Handel on Monday, while Mike Huckabee came to Georgia to back Deal over the weekend. Newt Gingrich, from the northern Atlanta suburbs, also released a web video this weekend calling Dean the "leading conservative" in the race.

The winner will face Democratic former Gov. Roy Barnes in November.

The Colorado GOP governor nominee will end up in a three-way race against Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, and former Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo, who jumped into the race in the past two weeks as the American Constitution Party's candidate. Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, decided not to run for re-election.

Rubin Kazan this week have declared their intentions to bring in quality players before their Champions League campaign begins and now have begun talks with Wolfsburg for midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic.

Rubin have lost two influential players from their squad to Zenit St. Petersburg in the last month and championat.ru have confirmed they see Misimovic as the perfect replacement for Sergei Semak. Rubin will not be too shy to shell out the money required to land German-born Bosnian international Misimovic, who has been linked to a host of top European clubs. The problem will be persuading the talented midfielder to switch to the RPL.

The Tatars played against Wolfsburg last term in the Champions League and were impressed with what they saw. Brazilian striker Grafite was also a target for the Russian club but they have already signed Obafemi Martins from the same club.

In the meantime talks for Spanish striker Daniel Guiza from Fenerbahce are still ongoing as coach Kurban Berdyev continues to search for an out and out striker to replace Aleksandr Bukharov.
